2011 Draft Pick Matt Barnes Makes First Leap

The Red Sox drafted Matt Barnes--a RHP from UConn--with their first pick (19th overall) in the 2011 First Year Player Draft. The highly touted pitching prospect didn't make his professional debut until 2012 due to the innings he pitched while at UConn in '11, but he's made up for the missed time, and then some.

Barnes didn't allow a run until his fifth start with the Greenville Drive, a total of 26 2/3 scoreless innings before that run came. In 26 2/3 innings, the righty has a 2-0 record, 0.34 ERA and 43 K's. He was simply overwhelming to hitters at the Single-A level.

According to Alex Speier of weei.com, Barnes will now be faced with a challenge as he has been promoted to the High-A Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League. Look to see how he progresses at the High-A level, it could tell us a lot about his future arrival in the big leagues.
