It seemed very likely that Cook would be called based on his 1.89 ERA in 4 starts at the Sox' Triple-A affiliate and the demotion of Lars Anderson last night but the Red Sox still haven't made an official announcement regarding the issue. The Sox will have 48 hours to make the move official.
There could be another move coming soon as well. Kevin Youkilis missed his third consecutive last night due to what was called "back stiffness", perhaps paving the way for a promotion of top third base prospect Will Middlebrooks.
In 24 games with the PawSox, Middlebrooks is hitting .333 with 9 HR and 27 RBI in 93 at-bats while Youkilis has been close to the Mendoza line at .219 with 2 HR, 9RBI on the season.
By promoting Will Middlebrooks now, the Red Sox would either use him as a backup--which isn't likely--or risk losing a year of arbitration eligibility, something that the Sox aren't likely to worry much about but it will figure into the decision.
