Josh Beckett Scratched, Franklin Morales to Start Sunday
According to a report from Scott Lauber, via Twitter, Josh Beckett has been scratched from Sunday's start against the Cubs at Wrigley Field due to shoulder inflammation. Lauber says that Franklin Morales will start in place of the Red Sox number two starter.
Bobby Valentine had recently acknowledged that Morales was being stretched in relief because there was a possibility he could start later in the season. The southpaw began his career with the Rockies as a starter, but had trouble maintaining his command while in the rotation.
In 2007, with Colorado, Morales started eight games and posted a 3-2 record with a 3.43 ERA, but in 2008 he posted a 6.39 ERA in 5 starts at the big league level. He also started a pair of games in 2009 before being relegated to bullpen duty, where he's remained since.
It's not clear how serious the injury to Beckett is, but hold your breath. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe tweeted that he will have tests, but nothing more is known right now. Aside from a pair of rough outings this season, the righty has arguably been the best starter in the Red Sox rotation. When we know more, you will know more.
