Under normal circumstances, Bobby Valentine would be thrilled to get Melancon back after he allowed just 2 ER in 21 2/3 innings at Pawtucket, but the corresponding move is cause for concern. Boston sent lefty reliever Rich Hill to the disabled list with soreness in his surgically repaired throwing elbow.
Hill worked his way back from Tommy John surgery this season and pitched well in the big leagues, posting a 2.63 ERA in 17 appearances. The full extent of the injury is unclear at the moment.
If Melancon works out as well in Boston as he did in Pawtucket, it will lessen the blow a bit. Working in save situations, the former closer allowed just 15 H and 3 BB while striking out 27 and recording 11 saves in his 21 2/3 innings of work.
As soon as the details surrounding Rich Hill's injury become clear, you can find it here.
